Faversham Town are ready to smash through the 2,000 attendance barrier
for their pre-season friendlies with the visit of Maidstone United on Thursday night.

Stones boss Lloyd Hume is expected to field a strong side as he gears up for an assault on the Kent League title this season backed by one of the biggest fanbases in the area.

Town have already welcomed more than 1,600 fans to revamped Salters Lane this summer and are confident that with Maidstone's large travelling support, they could hit the magical 2,000 mark this week.

Vice-chairman John Webb said: "We'd like to thank everyone who has turned up to support us as a new club. It's been absolutely terrific and it is our hope that people will continue to support the team throughout the season.

"Maidstone have a strong core support dating back to their days as a professional club so we are expecting another big gate."

Town entertain Herne Bay on Tuesday night but it is the visit of Maidstone that Town boss Terry Cordice has looked forward to since moving into the hot-seat at the end of May.

Cordice, who prefers to be called TC, spent three years at the Stones as reserve team boss before striking out for Faversham with his assistant Peter Holder this summer.

He said: "We'll approach it just like any other game to be fair but there's always something extra in a game when it's against one of your old teams.

"I'm sure a few of my lads will be looking to prove a point. The likes of Dave Hockley, Lloyd Miller, James Holder, Mark Smith and Giacomino Vail all played for me last season and maybe didn't get the first-team recognition their form deserved.

"Me and Peter are really looking forward to the game. We've played  some really good sides this summer and Maidstone are no exception. I  spent three good years with the club before deciding it was time to  move on.

"Their support is very strong and they are likely to bring a few hundred with them which should make for an excellent atmosphere."

And he added: "They have a good squad and have brought in some quality players this summer with Mo Takaloo signing from Ramsgate. They have an ex-pro in former Gillingham player Gary Kimble as well as guys with experience of the Conference and Southern Premier League  including Jimmy Strouts and Pat Mullin who were both at Dover.

"Again, it's a tough game but this is what good preparation is all about.  We're building for the future and a time when, hopefully, we are playing at a higher level."

Faversham take on Maidstone twice in three days with Town Veterans creaking into action for their first game at revamped Salters Lane at 3pm on Saturday.

Both Cordice and Holder are hoping to show the first team how it should be done alongside fellow wrinklies including Martin How, Steve Wren, Phil Nutting, Dave West, Dave Harris, Trevor Patching, Steve Miles, Derek Thompson, Ollie Scamp, Martin Arnold and Mark Lott with former Town boss Percy Prior also rumoured to be dusting down his boots.

Town chairman Bob Mason normally takes charge of the Vets but has
passed the reins to Tich Potterton while he continues his recuperation
from major surgery on holiday in Greece.

He said: "I wish the lads all the best. It's a shame I can't play but it's just as well I suppose. With all this weight I've lost I'd be about three yards quicker than everyone else."
