Bromley Green on course of retaining both cups

HOLDERS Bromley Green booked their place in this season's Ashford Sunday League Premier Division Cup Final on 24th April at The Homelands with a 1-0 win over surprise team Ashford Cavaliers last Sunday, writes Stephen McCartney.

On a slippery Swan Ground playing surface, Bromley Green again wasted a host of opportunities to settle the tie during a goalless first half.

The visitors, however, who failed to muster a single worthwhile shot, held out until twenty minutes from time when the Green introduced substitutes David Cook and Craig Southen.

A splendid move involving Pat Kingwell and Marcus Hodges created the chance for Southen to pick his spot from the edge of the area leaving the plucky Cavaliers with a mountain to climb.

Pick of the Bromley Green players were central defenders Lee Gilham and veteran Jamie Allan, while Chris Jones caught the eye for the brave visitors.

Meanwhile, the other semi-final between Bliby and Market came to a sad and abrupt halt when an horrific first half injury to Bliby striker Pixie Metcalfe needed an air ambulance.  After a long delay both sides agreed to start another day.

Bromley Green finally got their Weald of Kent Charity Cup tie against Tenterden Town played on Easter Monday and progressed by two goals to one.

The Green kept alive their hopes of retaining the Weald of Kent mantle but underdogs Tenterden put up a great fight before succumbing to two second half goals.

Tenterden took a shock lead when an innocuous effort deflected off Green new boy, New Zealander tralisit Richard Clements, and deceived goalkeeper Dan Noden.

Shortly after the break, leading striker Hodges levelled and a fine header by Cook looked to have settled matters.

However, a contentious flag ruled the attempt out, presumably for offside, and the Green had to wait until the final ten minutes for the winner.

Another aerial assault, with this time the outstanding Kingwell nodding home, which finally ended the visitors challenge.

Bromley Green now travel to Lydd Town on Saturday for a quarter-final tie.  The winners of which will entertain Tyler Hill in the semi-finals.  The final this year has been put back to the May Bank Holiday Monday.
