Abbott searching for a Kent club?

GARY Abbott insists he would love to stay with Ryman League Premier Division club Braintree Town, but believes he may have to quit Cressing Road.

The assistant/player-manager has been offered a non-playing role next season on reduced terms.

But Abbott, 40, insists he can still do a job on the pitch and does not want to hang up his boots yet.

He scored some important goals last season, but was dogged by injuries and did not play as much as he would have liked.

However, the Kent-based striker said: "I still believe I can do a job on the pitch and I feel no different to what I did four or five years ago.

"But they're offering me only half of what I was on last season and I can't afford to take a cut like that.

"I'm doing a 180-mile round trip every time I come to Braintree and it costs me a lot in petrol. I'm going to have to talk to George Borg to see if we can come to some sort of arrangement."

The former Welling United star striker added: "I don't want to leave Braintree. I've really enjoyed my time there and believe we're going to do well again next season."
