PHOENIX SPORTS  3-0 ASHFORD UNITED
Kent Invicta League
Saturday 4th February 2012
Stephen McCartney reports from Mayplace Road East

PHOENIX SPORTS were rewarded for beating the big freeze by sealing a 3-0 victory over Ashford United to move to within eight points of Kent Invicta League leaders Bly Spartans with ten games remaining.

Two goals from striker Alfie Harris and a fine solo goal from midfielder Adam Cuthbert ensured the Bexleyheath based side leapfrogged over Hollands & Blair into third place.

Scott Saunders’ side opened the lead in the tenth minute when Gary Phillimore laid the ball off to Harris, whose left-footed drive from 22-yards nestled into the bottom far corner, past Billy Rice’s despairing dive.

Harris squandered a decent chance when he shot straight at Rice in a good opening spell from the home side.

Ashford then dominated and left-back Richard Quigley tested Phoenix keeper Stuart Harvey with a left-footed drive from 25-yards after Sam Conlon dummied Dan Scorer’s right-wing corner.

Phoenix should have doubled their lead when the unmarked Sam Prett hooked a half-volley over from ten-yards after Harris flicked on Danny Frost’s throw.

Ashford defender Lee Coburn’s right-footed rasping drive from 35-yards was heading towards the top right-hand corner, but Harvey dived high to his left to push the ball away, before the Phoenix keeper made a fine low save to thwart Peter Williams from scoring with a first time shot after being put in by James Dryden.

Dominant Ashford, who won the corner count 13-4, should have pulled a goal back in the 57th minute when Sam Conlon released Roy Guiver through on goal but the versatile player blasted the ball straight at Harvey.

Referee Ian Miller was lenient halfway through the second half when he didn’t send off Liam Whiting for his sliding lunge on Frost, who despite already being on a yellow card, Frost bounced straight up and raised his hands onto Whiting’s chest.  Whiting was booked for his challenge and Frost controversially stayed on the pitch.

But Phoenix weathered the storm and hit Ashford on the break to double their lead in the 80th minute.

Adam Cuthbert picked up a loose ball and danced past a couple of Ashford defenders and stroked a fine low shot past Rice to find the bottom near corner.

Phoenix made it three wins out of three over Ashford this season when Harris scored his second four minutes later.

Dom Websdale clipped the ball into the penalty area and Harris turned and cracked a left-footed volley to beat Rice at his near post.
