Big month ahead for Deal

DEAL TOWN manager Derek Hares saw his side climb to twelve place in the Go Travel Kent League table with a 4-3 victory at North Dane Way against nine-man Lordswood on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

Whilst 12th place may be midtable in most leagues in England, it is a cause for concern for managers in Kent football as the Go Travel Kent League only has sixteen teams, one of them are Sporting Bengal United who play in Mile End, east London, and managers have voiced their opinions that the league needs to be expanded.

"We definitely need more teams in the Kent League.  The league is too small and there are not enough home games," expressed the Deal Town manager.

Last Saturday, Hares side travelled to Thamesmead Town for a first round Kent Senior Trophy tie and he was furious that the game was decided on the day, instead of going to a replay, to give both club's another fixture in what is already a very reduced football fixture list.

"I don't understand that our game at Thamesmead Town, which ended in a 3-3 draw went into extra time - but the league rules state it's extra time and penalties if needed on the day.

"This is silly because a replay would have given us more games."

Thamesmead, however, averted the lottery of penalties, with Curtis Williams scoring a very late winner to send Paul Blade's side into the next round with a 4-3 win after extra time.

With the Floodlight Trophy entered by only five clubs this season, and is only open to reserve team players and up to three first team players at a time, an idea to open the competition fully to first team players is welcomed by several managers in Kent League football.

Four groups of four teams can be split locally, and played in midweek, and the top two club's in each group go on into the quarter final stage.  This will give clubs at least another six more matches per season and fill up those blank Saturday and midweek slots.

Hares, however, hasn't got a problem with British Energy Kent County League sides being promoted, even without floodlights.

"It's a difficult one because teams coming up from the county league have no lights and that stops teams coming in.

"If these teams came in to the Kent League we would have earlier kick off's.

"This isn't a problem for me, but maybe for some others."

Deal Town were struggling at the foot of the table last season, in what was a year of rebuilding.

However, Hares predicts his side will be looking to finish this campaign in the top half of the table, and will be looking to do well against sides amongst them at the wrong end in the next few weeks.

"Hopefully, our aim this year is to finish in the top half of the league," he said.

"We struggled last year with a new team, rebuilding through the club.

"There has been a lot of work at the club with the ground and the pitch but slowly but surely we are heading in the right direction."

Saturday's win at Lordswood was very important and gives Hares' side confidence going into next week's home FA Vase clash with Petersfield Town.

Their visitors ply their trade in the second division of the Sydenham's Wessex League and are ninth in the table, so on paper, Deal should progress into the second round.

"A very important win for us yesterday," admitted the manager.

"We've had three away games on the trot, we won the FA Vase game at Sevenoaks Town 2-1, and last week went to extra time at Thamesmead when we lost 4-3 after extra time in the Kent Senior Trophy - they scored from the last kick of the game.

"Yesterday, we managed to scrape one 4-3.

"I only know Petersfield are from the Wessex League and are a similar league to us and getting a home draw in a game we can hopefully win.

"This month is a big period for us.

"Lordswood were near us in the league table, we've got the FA Vase game next Saturday, and two games at home to Slade Green, one in the league and one in the league cup.

"We are looking to beat Slade Green and if we can get two wins and six points it will push us in the top half of the table.

"We are certainly strong than we were last year.

"The players from last season have grown in experience and it's starting to show.  Apart from Lee Bosson and goalkeeper Jason Hughes, my side has an average age of 21-22."
