is still being modest over his sides chances of success in this season's
Nationwide Conference South campaign, writes Stephen McCartney. The Wings' have had a relatively good pre-season campaign, starting with a resilient 1-1 draw over a full-strength Charlton Athletic side before beating Kent League side Herne Bay (2-0) at Winch's Field and Nationwide Conference side Stevenage Borough by the same score on home turf. But a blip followed when Grays Athletic came away from Park View Road with an 8-1 win before the Wing's bounced back with a 9-0 win at Kent League neighbours, Erith Town, with former Margate striker, Che Stadhart netting five. And Stadhart continued his impressive form, netting a brace against a young Gillingham side. Pennock, however, wants his side to "do the right things" when they play their final pre-season friendly at Ryman Premier League neighbours Bromley on Friday night. "Like every game I want to win," he said in an EXCLUSIVE interview with www.kentishfootball.co.uk after the Gills' game. "I want things to be done properly." After suffering minor injuries against the Gills, Lee Gledhill (dead leg) and Stadhart (gash on his shin), should be fit enough to take to the impressive new pitch at Hayes Lane. It took 13 minutes for the Wings to take the lead when full-back Danny Lawson hit a cross-cum-shot from the right hand side of the penalty area. Former Wings' goalkeeper, Danny Knowles saw the speculative shot sail high over his head and cannon against the top of the far post, but the ball bounced off the back of the bemused goalkeepers head and found the net to the delight of the home faithful. However, if you spoke to the Wing's number three, he would have said he tried to beat the goalkeeper from 30-yards - as did Ronaldinho against David Seaman in the last World Cup. Well, the home side were in their away strip of yellow shirts, blue shorts and white socks! Former Herne Bay striker, Danny Kedwell seems to have made the step up into higher league football, everybody knew he would, and he could have doubled the lead just before half-time. James Pinnock sent over a cross from the right for him, but his header flashed agonisingly wide of the post. After Pinnock's looping header flew just over Knowles' crossbar inside the first minute of the second half, Stadhart found the net with two excellent goals within a minute, both from 25-yards. His first came from the outside of his right foot, which curled past Knowles and into the left corner of the net. And a minute later he drilled the ball, right-footed, into the bottom right hand corner, to give the impressive looking non-league side a 3-0 lead. Former Tonbridge Angels' goalkeeper, Jamie Turner was substituted with four minutes to go and former Gills' youngster Darren Ibrahim took over in between the sticks, but the first thing he did was pick the ball out of his net, from Johnson's fierce drive that found the net via the left upright. But Gills also made a change in goal and Daniel Moore, latching onto a pass from the midfield, excellently fired the ball into the bottom far corner moments after Gills' consolation strike. Wings' fans must be relishing the opening day of the season, when St Albans City visit Park View Road on 13th August. But Pennock admits there is a lot more work to do before they kick off their Nationwide Conference South campaign. Reflecting on their latest win, he said: "It was better than our last performance at home (lost 8-1 to Grays). I thought the movement was good and there were some good individual performances out there - but don't get me wrong there's still a lot more to do. "There are some things we need to work on in training but overall if you look at the bigger picture that was a good performance," said the former Gills star. After their trip to Bromley, Pennock will be instilling what he wants from his players ahead of their clash with St Albans City. "We'll be working hard, just preparing for that game," he said. Obviously we've already watched them, and we'll watch them again and prepare them for that game, and the boys will be right up for it." And the modest manager added: "I'm not going to say we are going to win the league or get into the play-offs and this that and the other. "But we want to improve on last season really. It will be nice to get off to a good start. "Every club wants to get off to a good start and if we carry on like we've done in pre-season, we've had a decent pre-season, the top half would be nice but as long as we improve from last season that will do me." |
