Pennock snaps up Gills pair

Adrian Pennock, manager of Nationwide South club Welling United, has once again returned to one of his former clubs, Gillingham, this time to pull of the coup of persuading experienced midfielder Mark Saunders to move to Park View Road on a month’s loan, reports www.nonleaguedaily.com

Saunders,  is, of course, no stranger to the non-League game. He appeared in the 1993 FA Vase Final at Wembley for Tiverton Town and helped them to a couple of Western League titles before being signed by neighbouring Plymouth Argyle in August 1995.

After making around 80 appearances for the Pilgrims he was signed by Gillingham on a Bosman free in the summer of 1998 and has since played in every position for the Gills, including in goal and his appearances total currently stands at 175.

He is known for his high work rate, his tackling as well as being a box-to-box player and has chipped in with a number of important goals.

Many Gills’ fans put down relegation from the Championship last season partly to Saunders’ absence, having broken his leg at the beginning of the season.

Pennock has also signed 19-year-old former Gills striker Matt Bodkin on a non-contract basis.

Bodkin, who has also played for Nottingham Forest, will be keen to impress Pennock, who confirmed that both players will be involved this weekend.
