Welling starting to gel, admits Parker

PAUL PARKER, manager of Nationwide South club Welling United, has admitted he is extremely happy with the pre-season progress of his newly assembled squad, but has moved quickly to ensure the players understand that commitment and discipline go hand in hand, writes Stephen McCartney.

Speaking on the club's website, the former Chelmsford City boss revealed: "I have told the players they need to understand that the commitment and passion they have shown in the match against Gravesend has to be disciplined."

After his side lost 1-0 at Stonebridge Road, the former England defender added: "Referee's will be very quick to punish any player who raises his hands in confrontation.

"We are playing some good pass and move football and the squad is starting to gel." he admitted.

Parker said that he has signed local players in a bid to help traveling to training sessions.

However, an x-ray has revealed a broken fibia for Tommy Tyne, following the injury picked up against Tonbridge Angels, earlier in the pre-season programme.

The former Dover Athletic striker is expected to be out for at least one month, and could miss up to the first seven games of the season.

A knee injury picked up in the same clash with Angels former Gravesend & Northfleet stopper, Jamie Turner, will require a separate scan, however.

Midfielder Danny Slatter has, however, committed his short-term future to the Park View Road club, by signing a one-year contract.   However, defensive duo, Ian Wilkes and Tony Browne are both expected to sign similar deals shortly.
