Award winning Pennock confident of cup success |
| Adrian Pennock admitted Welling
United's away result against Bognor Regis Town last Saturday "was
like a win" - even though the Wings drew 0-0, writes Alex Leach - www.bexleytimes.co.uk Despite losing Lee Gledhill and Steve Perkins before the game, the Wings boss watched on as his players dug deep to secure a point and he was duly elated with the draw. "I thought it was an excellent result - considering the circumstances - as Bognor are a good team. "Before the game, I would have taken that scoreline," he said. "The boys just showed a lot of character and every single one of them was superb. "After the game, the result felt like a win. Right from the outset, we were up against it." The draw was not the only reason for Pennock to celebrate this week as he also picked up the Conference South Manager of the Month award for September; a month in which he guided his side to three successive league wins while progressing in both the FA and London Senior Cups. He said: "I was chuffed to bits, but it's not just about me. I've got a great coaching staff behind me with my assistant Phil Handford plus Neil Witherington, Peter Green and Vince Bartram as well as the players as they are the ones who have been doing it on the pitch. "I'm over the moon as it's my first award in management which I'm really pleased with, but it's a collective thing and not an individual award." Midfielder Mark Saunders' loan move has ended and he has gone back to Gillingham, while Jamie Day will return for this Saturday's FA Cup third qualifying round against Ryman Premier League side Harrow Borough. Perkins remains a major doubt for the game, but Gledhill is expected to overcome his illness in time for a match Pennock knows will be a tough test. He said: "They're a good, young team and they will be no push-overs. We've got to play well to beat them. But we're confident, it's the FA Cup - the biggest cup competition in the world - and we want to do well in it."
