Watts leaves Park View Road with Pennock's blessing

Long serving Welling United defender Lew Watts has left the Nationwide Conference South club to join Ryman League Division One leaders Tonbridge Angels, writes Stephen McCartney.

The 31-year-old was released from his contract after scoring and captaining the Wings during their 5-0 win over Erith & Belvedere in the London Senior Cup on Wednesday night.

Welling manager Adrian Pennock told www.wellingonline.co.uk : "I'd like to place on record our thanks to Lew, who has been a terrific servant.

"He wanted first-team football but it was a hard decision for him to make.  He has been superb to manage and coach this season and I'm sure he will do well for Tonbridge.

"Lew has not missed a training session all season and he always did well when we called upon him."

Goals from Mark Saunders, Watts, Rob Owen, Matt Carruthers and Adrian Clarke secured their victory over the Deres and travel to Croydon Athletic in the next round.  Pennock handed debuts to former Gillingham goalkeeper Darren Ibrahim and Terry Penfold.

Meanwhile, Welling's trip to Ryman Premier League side Harrow Borough in the FA Cup third qualifying round next Saturday, 8th October, will kick off at the Earlsmead Stadium at 1:00pm, to avoid clashing with the England game.
