Pennock delighted as Smith returns to Welling

Young defender James Smith has re-signed for Nationwide South club Welling United, following a short spell with Conference National side Dagenham & Redbridge.

The 18-year-old was originally a non-contract YTS player with Cambridge United when he joined Welling under Paul Parker, but the club reluctantly let him go when Adrian Pennock took charge.

Smith had cited that Conference National clubs had been interested in him and the club agreed not to hold him back.

Pennock was delighted when Smith then re-contacted the club last week out of the blue and admitted that he had made a mistake leaving in the first place, and the new Wings’ boss wasted no time in snapping up the exciting youngster on a contract until the end of this season.
