Wings climb to thirteenth

THE WEST of England seems to have been one of the few places in England where games could take place on Wednesday night, including the Nationwide South match between Weston-super-Mare and Welling United, writes Stephen McCartney.

And, despite it being little more than a mid-table encounter, it was certainly a lively affair!

Welling have enjoyed an excellent run of form since Adrian Pennock took over as manager at a time when they looked like being embroiled in a relegation battle.

However, this 2-0 win took the Wings to the heady heights of thirteenth place in the table, leaping above their hosts in the process.

It took 65 minutes for the opening goal to arrive when new loan signing from leaders Grays Athletic, midfielder Martin Carthy, did what he often does - scores goals.

Welling didn't have to wait long for a match-winning second to come as just two minutes later Lee Spiller doubled their advantage.

But that wasn't the end of the excitement as Weston finished the game with nine-men after both Marc McGregor and Mark McKeevor saw read, while Welling had Danny Slatter sent-off and assistant-manager Phil Handford sent off from the bench.

Wings are due to return to Park View Road on Saturday when they host Havant & Waterlooville in the Nationwide Conference South (3pm).  However, like all matches in the county, please check the home club before travelling due to the poor weather (snow) conditions we've been suffering this week.
