Pennock wants to maintain impressive cup record
EXCLUSIVE

Welling United manager Adrian Pennock has a proud FA Cup history as a Gillingham player - and now he wants the magic of the famous cup competition to rub of onto his Nationwide Conference players, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wings' start their campaign in the second qualifying round with a trip to Boreham Wood on Saturday, and the Gillingham based manager is expecting a tough game against the Southern League Division One East leaders.

In an EXCLUSIVE interview with www.kentishfootball.co.uk, he said: "Yes, it will be a difficult game.  It's the FA Cup and the club and I want to do well in it due to the obvious financial reasons.

"It will be a difficult game.  I went to see them in their replay win over Bury Town and they are a decent side.

"They've had a very good run in the league so we are under no illusions and we're not going to take them likely - its the FA Cup and we want to do things properly."

The Park View Road club, however, are currently living up to expectations and are third in the Nationwide Conference South table.

Steve Perkins impressed during their 1-0 win over Hayes last Saturday, and Pennock is pleased with their progress so far.

"I am pleased getting the results in but with the FA Cup on Saturday, it's a nice little break from the league - but the FA Cup has got everything hasn't it?

"It's the biggest cup competition in the world and I really want a nice run in it."

Speaking about versatile Perkins, he added: "He's a player who can play anywhere in the middle of the park.

"He is comfortable in every position I've played him and he hasn't let me down, so I'm very pleased for him."

Pennock recalls the FA Cup clashes he's had as a player against Chelsea (twice), Charlton and Blackburn and is relishing his debut as a manager.

"The furthest I went was the fifth round when I was at Gillingham," he said.

"I've had some good times in the FA Cup and I've scored in the third round against Charlton, which was a bonus.

"When I was at Gravesend as assistant manager we got through to the first round against Notts County, so I've had some good times and long may it continue."

With a full strength side to choose from except for Che Stadhart and the suspended Danny Kedwell, Pennock added: "It's not about the performance, it's all about winning and getting through to the next round."
