Pennock promises more summer signings
WELLING UNITED
boss Adrian Pennock has promised more signings despite Adrian Clarke becoming
his seventh new arrival this summer, writes Stephen McCartney.
The 30-year-old has joined the Park View Road club on a one-year deal having signed from
Ryman Premier League club Margate.
Clarke is a former
Arsenal winger, who won the FA Youth Cup at Highbury as well as making ten first
team appearances during the 1995-96 campaign.
He then moved to Southend United, making over 100 appearances. The former
England Youth International has also played in the Conference for Stevenage
Borough and has also spent loan spells at Rotherham United, Carlisle United and
Hendon.
He played on the left hand side of Margate's midfield or defence, contributing
to some spectacular goals.
And in an EXCLUSIVE interview with www.kentishfootball.co.uk
the Wing's boss said: "I've watched Adrian for a long time now and Phil
Handford worked with him whilst at Margate.
"I think he's a quality player, he's got a fantastic left foot and set
pieces he's spot on. His deliveries in general play, he'll give it quality
in supplying the forwards.
"And he gives me nice balance on the left of midfield."
Pennock admitted he was pleased Clarke chose to sign for the Park View Road club
with many clubs chasing his signature.
"To be fair he was reluctant to leave Margate and he got on really well
with their manager, Chris Kinnear," he said.
"He told me he had five clubs after his signature but he chose us. He
saw the set up, spoke to other players at the club and was pleased to join us.
"I was pleased with the signing, he's upbringing, playing for Arsenal's
first team - he's got experience and quality."
Clarke's signing now gives Pennock a squad of 13 players and they are all on
contract except for defender Matt Lee - and the Nationwide South club are still
searching for more.
"I am still looking," Pennock revealed. "I am pleased because
everyone I've gone for, I've got. So I am pleased with the way things have
gone.
"The players I've got in, will be great in the changing room. They
will run through a brick wall for me on the Saturday."
And Pennock said he is looking to do better than last season's troubled
campaign.
"I would like to finish in the top half of the league and anything better
would be a bonus."
