Pennock: I'm pleased with start
but we have to work hard to stay there |
| Welling United manager Adrian Pennock
is pleased with their start to their Nationwide Conference South campaign
- but insists there is still a lot more hard work to do, writes Stephen
McCartney. The Park View Road outfit are comfortably sitting in fourth place behind Cambridge City, Sutton United and Lewes with seven points from their opening three outings and host Yeading next Saturday looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season. Starting off with a 2-1 victory against St Albans City at Park View Road, Pennock's men gained four points from their next two away games - lengthy trips to Histon and Weston-super-Mare. Unfortunately, they were denied a win last Wednesday night at Histon as the home side scored a last minute equaliser but former Dover Athletic star Matt Carruthers scored the only goal of the game yesterday. "I am pleased with the start we've had but there is a long way to go," he said in an EXCLUSIVE interview with www.kentishfootball.co.uk today. "But I would rather have the points in the bag than none at all. "The boys have showed a lot of character in the games. On Wednesday (at Histon) we should have taken all three points and we should have nine points on the board instead of seven, but obviously I would take the seven out of nine from the start of the season." The Wings boss is pleased with their start but his seventeen-man squad needs to put in a lot of hard work if they are to stay in the higher reaches of the league. "We are under no illusions with a lot of hard work to be done still," he said. "If we are still in this position at Christmas I will be happy but we've got some big games coming up. "To be fair it's been a team effort," he said. "I've got a squad together and everyone's performed well. Also if the subs have come on for 20 minutes they've done a job. "I'm not one for picking out individuals but everyone has pulled together, showed character and got some decent results." Yeading secured promotion as Ryman Premier League champions last season and who can forget their clash with Premiership giants Newcastle United in front of the TV camera at Loftus Road in the FA Cup third round in January? The West Londoners will provide a tough test for the Kent side according to the Gillingham resident. "It will be a very good test against Yeading," Pennock said. "They are newly promoted and they've haven't had a bad start to the season. "We are under no illusions that it will be a hard game. I've had them watched, they attack very well and are a hard working team with a great team spirit and they've got some good players." Pennock was impressed with the work ethic shown by the team from the Warren. "You can see that there not a team of individuals and they do work extremely hard for each other," he said. "Johnson Hippolyte (Yeading manager) has got a good team together and taken it into the higher league and after their promotion they are doing well." Pennock revealed "We've had some hard games, the two away games were more of a battle but hopefully we'll have a full squad to choose from." And with Margate returning home to Hartsdown Park yesterday, and Chris Kinnear's men beating Maldon Town 1-0 to get their debut Ryman Premier League campaign off to a winning start, Pennock had this to say about the Thanet club and Kent football in general. "Margate have gone through hell and back and it's great for Chris (Kinnear) and Kent football that Margate have got their own stadium now and good for their supporters that they've gone home, and I hope the only way is up for them. "Personally I want every team in Kent to do well, that's from Gravesend in the Conference down to Kent League side Sevenoaks Town." |
