Welling Lay it on the line

Isthmian League Premier Division club Chelmsford City’s ‘Young Player of the Year' George Lay, has joined Nationwide Conference South side Welling United on non-contract terms.

The young winger was considered an exciting prospect by the Clarets management team last season, and Wings’ manager Paul Parker said of Lay: "George can play either wide right or wide left and is exceptionally good with the ball at his feet. He works hard and is a young lad who has a bright future if he does well at Conference level."

Meanwhile, Parker has announced that four of last season’s squad have not been retained for the 2004/05 season.

Austin Berkeley, Brian Statham, Kenny Dyer and Ian Cousins have not been offered new contracts at Park View Road.

Parker explained, "The club have moved into a different division this year with a much different set-up to the Southern League. We have to adapt with a different approach to the way we do things and look at specific personnel to do a job in this new league.

“I am continually looking at players who are skilful and comfortable on the ball and that will provide the squad with a method to be successful in Conference surroundings."
