We are not far away of actually walloping a side, warns Ashby |
| Barry Ashby has warned Welling
United's Nationwide Conference South rivals that they can expect a
walloping once the Wings get their shooting boots on, writes Stephen
McCartney. The Wings squandered a hat-full of chances against Sutton United on Saturday and had to settle for a point in a goal-less draw - their fifth consecutive league draw. But the former Gillingham star, who has played just four games in non-league football with the Park View Road outfit, has seen enough at his new club to feel their best is still to come. "I would be a little more worried if we weren't creating chances at all," he told www.kentishfootball.co.uk after yesterday's frustrating draw. "We created a hat-full of chances, it's not our time at the minute. It's not just the forwards, the defenders come up for set pieces so we have to take our fair share as well. "At the minute it's a little bit difficult. We are not getting turned over. I know there's a few too many draws but we are not far away of actually walloping a side. "If somebody catches us on a right day there's going to be a heavy thumping coming up," the big central defender warned. Ashby, who played despite suffering from stomach problems, and a lack of sleep, is confident his team-mates can bounce back from their drawing sequence and register wins at Thurrock on Tuesday night and St Albans City next Saturday - against sides in the top six. "There's still a long way to go in the season and there's a lot of points to play for," he said. "As I said, we just need to get a few goals, a bit of confidence through the team. "It seems strange to be standing here talking as though we lost - we've actually drawn a game but the lads are down. "We haven't lost - we are just down that we created a lot of chances and we should put teams to the sword." Goalkeeper Jamie Turner, meanwhile, was a proud man after he collected the club's player of the month award for November prior to kick off. The former Gravesend & Northfleet and Tonbridge Angels goalkeeper made a superb save late in the first half, diving to his left to tip over Robert Hughes' 8-yard header. "I was quite surprised to get that (award)," he admitted. "It's always nice to get a trophy and acknowledgement. But despite keeping his ninth clean sheet of the season, Turner was frustrated that his team mates failed to take their many chances at the other end. "Today we made bundles of chances but we just didn't find the net," he said. "That's basically our problem. We are making the chances but we're just not finishing them." Ashby added that he's impressed with the standard of the league. "It's going to be tough, it's a tough league," he said. "I've been in pro football for a long time. I've come here, and the short time I've been around the non-league scene it's a tough league with decent sides." Fifth placed Wings, however, know what to expect from the Essex side, with their 1-1 Boxing Day draw fresh in their minds. On that day, Danny Kedwell's fourteenth goal of the season gave the Kent side an early lead but Thurrock stole a point courtesy of former Tonbridge Angels and Burgess Hill Town striker, Steve Harper scoring a 75th minute penalty.
