Pennock pleased his side made their point
EXCLUSIVE

Former Watford, Brentford and Gillingham defender, Barry Ashby is expected to make his Welling United debut against bottom of the table side Carshalton Athletic at Park View Road on Tuesday night, writes Stephen McCartney.

Having recently signed for the Nationwide Conference South club on non-contract terms, the robust central defender, who won a FA Youth Cup winners medal during his days as a trainee at Vicarage Road, also netted a valuable ten goals whilst at Priestfield, should make his Wings' debut against a side without a win from their first ten league games.

But after Ashby twisted his back last Thursday, which forced him to miss the Wing's 1-1 draw against promotion rivals Cambridge City on Saturday, Pennock was also without the services of Chris Moore (suspended), Matt Carruthers (knee), Robert Owen (knee) and Daniel Moore - but Pennock was pleased his side made their point.

The Wings, however, who embark on a big week ahead, remain in fourth place in the table - only two points behind leaders Sutton United - and go into this week in buoyant mood.

In an EXCLUSIVE interview with www.kentishfootball.co.uk, Pennock admitted: "I thought it was a cracking game.

"The atmosphere in the ground was great, with over 800 people there, which was superb and the fans got behind the boys.  I was pleased to get the result."

Former Herne Bay striker, Danny Kedwell scored an 89th minute equaliser for the Kent side, after Cambridge took the lead through Craig Dobson 18 minutes earlier.

And former Wing's striker, Paul Booth had an excellent chance to score against his former club - but dragged his shot wide.

"To be fair, I was pleased with everyone," admitted a delighted Pennock.

"To get a crowd like that and put on the performance we did was very satisfying.

"We rode our luck a little bit.  Jamie Turner pulled off two great saves and they hit the bar, but I felt we thoroughly deserved the goal in the end."

And Welling can continue their promotion push when winless Carshalton Athletic visit on Tuesday night.

But the former Gills' star, warns fans their Surrey opponents will make life difficult for them.

"Cambridge are a good team, have spent a lot of money, bringing in good players," he said.

"I was very pleased with the result, but we have a big game on Tuesday night against Carshalton.

"It's a very big week.  Carshalton are fighting, trying to get points and their first win.

"They will be fighting and scrapping for every ball against us, looking for their first win and we'll have to try to match that.  It will be nice to get three points."

And next Saturday, which www.kentishfootball.co.uk has billed as the "FA Cup Super Six", with six Kent clubs vying to join Gillingham in the first round proper of the world's greatest cup competition.

And wouldn't it be great to see Welling United, Bromley, Cray Wanderers, Folkestone Invicta, Gravesend & Northfleet and Ramsgate all in the hat for the draw?

Pennock revealed he travelled to Avenue Stadium last week to see opponents Dorchester Town's 3-2 replay win over last season's FA Cup heroes Yeading.

"Dorchester deserved their win and it will be a very hard game for us," warns Pennock.

"But we are confident at the moment and we are going there knowing it will be hard.  But we will give it our all, with the winners getting £10,000 plus a lucrative first round draw."

Pennock, however, is delighted he can draw star names to Park View Road.

Speaking about his new recruit, he added: "Barry has loads of experience, he's an organiser and has played in the top pressure level for 18 years, so he's a great signing for the club.

"I am very pleased to get him on board and it just shows the caliber of players we can bring into the club, which is great.

"I am pleased we can sign these good players.  It takes a lot of hard work and time to bring these players in but it shows we are doing the right things."

Meanwhile, the club are taking bookings for a supporters coach for Saturday's trip to Dorchester Town.

Leaving Park View Road at 10am, the coach will leave Dorchester at 5:45pm, and coach tickets, which can be purchased for £10 (adults) or £5 (concessions), at the WSU desk by the club shop at Park View Road on Tuesday night.
