Dover chief pleased with spirit

DOVER Athletic chairman Jim Parmenter believes the close-knit spirit at the club will reap rewards, writes Justin Allen.

Parmenter was impressed by the number of fans who turned up at the ground on Saturday morning to help clear the snow from the pitch - to ensure the match against Chelmsford City went ahead.

More than 20 supporters answered an SOS call from the club on their official website www.doverathletic.com, brought their shovels and got to work.

Parmenter, his fellow board members and fans all worked ahead of the referee's pitch inspection and successfully ensured the match was played.
Then nearly 800 fans - the club's target gate - turned up to watch Whites draw 1-1 and unlucky not to earn another three points against one of the best sides in the division.

He said: "It really is impressive. This is the kind of spirit which is needed. If the fans keep this up, helping the club out and turning up at the ground for the games in good numbers, we will definitely get this club motoring again.
"Results on the pitch have improved beyond recognition from before Christmas. Clive Walker has done a great job with the team since returning. He has given us an outside chance of staying up and despite dropping two points on Saturday we're not dead and buried yet.

"Whatever happens to us at the end of the season - and we're desperate to stay in the Ryman Premier - we're heading in the right direction now. If we go down, we'll be pulling out all the stops to win the Ryman One title straight away. If we stay up, we'll be going all out to win promotion to Conference South.
"Of course, we're not going to be paying silly money on wages. We'll be managing the club in a sensible way, paying good wages but not salaries that will run up more debt. We're trying hard to clear the old debts now but need the fans to remain loyal - and continue their superb fundraising events.

"My fellow board members and I are impressed and proud with this club and fans. And, make no mistake, if we keep this up, the club will once again be back up there where it should be.

"I say a big well done to everyone. Keep the faith and keep turning up. We're in this together."

Veteran Bradley Sandeman, the former Maidstone, Northampton and Port Vale player, has signed for Dover until the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Jude Stirling has turned down a move to Conference South club Bishop's Stortford - who have a FA Trophy quarter-final clash with Gravesend & Northfleet to look forward to on the 12th March - in a bid to help the Whites avoid relegation.

The former Luton Town defender, is quickly establishing himself as a favourite among the club's faithful.

Bishop's Stortford recently made a seven-day approach for the non-contract player but boss Clive Walker announced: "Jude has decided to stay and I'm delighted with that.  We've got a great team spirit at the moment and Jude is a big part of that."
